Temporary Windshield Crack Measures: What They Can and Cannot Do

How to document a damaged windshield and arrange an assessment without mistaking a temporary measure for a safe repair.

A temporary measure is not a safety assessment

When a windshield cracks, start by considering whether the vehicle can be used safely. Tape, glue, or another improvised treatment should not be treated as proof that the windshield is repaired or safe to drive.

The windshield is part of the vehicle's safety system. The Auto Glass Safety Council's driver information explains why proper glass repair and installation matter.

What you can do before the assessment

  • When it is safe, take a close photo of the damage and a wider photo showing its location.
  • Write down when you noticed the crack and whether its appearance has changed.
  • Have the vehicle year, make, and model ready; provide the VIN when requested.
  • Tell the technician about any product or repair kit already applied to the damage.

Avoid applying household adhesives or other improvised fillers before asking a glass professional about the damage. A repair kit's availability does not establish that your particular crack is suitable for repair. The location, depth, condition, and surrounding damage need to be considered.

Do not drive with an obstructed view

If the damage blocks your view or the vehicle is unsafe, do not drive it to a shop appointment. Tell us where the vehicle is parked so you can discuss mobile availability. If mobile work is unsuitable, appropriate roadside assistance or towing may be needed.

Arrange the right service

Some damage may be eligible for professional repair; other damage requires windshield replacement. Call Longhorn Auto Glass at 210-885-1122 or send the vehicle details for an assessment request. San Antonio appointments are available daily from 8 AM to 6 PM, subject to availability.
