Pay attention to streaks and smears
Wipers should help you see through rain and road spray. If they leave streaks or smears, inspect the windshield and blades instead of repeatedly running them over the same dirty surface. Follow your vehicle owner's manual for cleaning and blade replacement instructions.
Clean first, then reassess
Clean the windshield and wiper blades using the method recommended for your vehicle. If cleaning does not resolve poor wiping, check the blades and replace them as directed by the manufacturer. Choose the correct blade size and attachment for the vehicle; driver and passenger blades may differ.
Avoid wiping a dry windshield
Use the washer system before wiping dry glass. Operating wipers on a dry windshield can scratch the glass or damage the blades. Fully defrost the windshield before operating the wipers, and follow the manual's precautions for snow or ice.
Ford gives these precautions in its owner-manual wiper guidance. Use the manual for your own vehicle to confirm the appropriate cleaning method, replacement procedure, and washer-fluid instructions.
Wiper care does not repair damaged glass
New blades cannot remove an existing chip, crack, or scratch. If a mark remains after the glass is clean, photograph it and explain where it sits. Tell us whether the issue is a wiping problem, visible glass damage, or both so the correct service can be discussed.
For an impact mark, see windshield chip repair. For damaged glass that needs replacing, see windshield replacement. Longhorn Auto Glass offers San Antonio appointments daily from 8 AM to 6 PM. Contact us with the vehicle details and a clear photo.
